On one of those rare adulting moments when I get to go out on my own, I was blessed enough to be gifted a ticket to the theatre. Thank you God because you and I both know the way my account is set up…it wasn’t going to happen any other way!!

I’ve just been to see I KNEW YOU whilst waiting for my budding thespian to come out of rehearsals-and it was-is, amazing.
The play is written by Steven Camden- known also as the spoken word artist Polarbear. It is a poignant piece (helps that it was relatable) about a teacher Angela, her son Nathan and his father Patrick.

I laughed, I cried and I wanted to box a ‘dad’.

The intimacy of the set, the simplicity of a script saturated with angst and coupled with brilliant direction and a thoroughly enjoyable cast made for an almost surreal experience…

I cannot begin to vocalise or put onto paper the experience (should probably read more) it was like sitting in on a convo with a friend or in my case witnessing someone spill your as yet unformed fears and frustrations about your present and future (it will not be our portion amen)

I will say, however, to fully appreciate this gem, you would really have to see it yourself. My only gripe is that I wanted more, time went by too quickly and if you know me I can never get enough of a good thing lol.

I KNEW YOU directed by Daniel Bailey, starring Lorna Laidlaw, Roderick Smith, and Brenton Hamilton, will be showing at Birmingham Repertory Theatre until 7 October.
